Interview with developer of freeware video player for Windows Mobile devices - BetaPlayer June 06, 2004 [General] | By Edward J. R. There are 2 problems with developers of freeware software: a) they release software for free what "steals" money from commercial developers and thus discourages those commercial developers from developing more and better applications for given platform... b) after some initial period of fascination these developers give up and the software that initially looked impressive becomes hard to use and outdated technologically. BetaPlayer is a free software for Pocket PC and Microsoft Smartphone that essentially allows you to play video recordings in some formats that built-in Windows Media Player doesn't support. French website Mobinaute presents interview with the developer of this program: For a free software developer sometimes it is hard to join some existing project because the author of such project quite often doesn't want to share sources and usually wants to keep the fame of being the author to himself alone (see case of Linus Torvalds who claims that invented Linux, while in fact he just copied some source code from Minix and it was huge community of developers, who created Linux by massive cooperative effort): The reason I started a new project is that I couldn't realize my plans within the offical PocketMVP project. It was very hard communicating with Marc, he had and probably still has very little time for PocketMVP development. He didn't even release the latest sources. As far as we - users and fans of Windows Mobile devices - are concerned, for us it is important only, that given programs is being further developed constantly and new features are added and existing extended, so it is nice to have BetaPlayer - another independent video player after Pocket TV and Pocket MVP: Betaplayer is available on Pocket PC and smartphone Microsoft platforms.
