Built-in GPS - new hope for Pocket PC platform
June 15, 2004 [Pocket PC] | By Edward J. R.

Pocket PC platform is dying. It is not a secret. PDAs as such have no bright future and will be slowly overtaken and replaced by smartphones and nifty Tablet PC notebooks. It is not a secret. Is there no future for Pocket PC at all? Yes! There is! Market success of Mitac Mio 168 with built-in GPS proves it:

Pocket PC with GPS has future

GPS antenna in Mitac Mio 168 is attached as standard to it but socket for external GPS antenna is also available in this Pocket PC. Mio 168 has big market success nowadays and is used by people for car navigation, but is also used extensively by pedestrians!

Here is Mitac Mio 136 - another upcoming model of a device with built-in GPS:

Another device with GPS and Windows CE

... that clearly shows the direction in which mobile devices are going. Yes, Pocket PC platform has a bright future, but not as a stand-alone PDA but as a wireless device (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and built-in cell phone) or as a navigation device (with GPS or with Galileo - competing system to GPS being constructed now by EU).
