TechEd 2004 Europe coverage : release date of Microsoft Smartphone with next version of OS (after 2003 Second Edition) revealed July 02, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R. The latest current version of operating system for Microsoft Smartphone is "Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition" (already some devices with it are shipping), which uses, as a core, the Windows CE 4.2. The next, after 2003 Second Edtion, version of operating system for Microsoft Smartphone will be based on Windows CE 5.0 and will have many interesting features like Camera API, Notification API, many improvements in smartphone platform, etc etc. Would you like to know when first hardware (devices) powered by this next version of smartphone software will be available commercially on the market for purchase? Well, we just learned from certain reliable Microsoft employee (who wouldn't like to be known) when it will be! Read on... The answer is: August 2005. At that time the Microsoft Smartphone devices based on Windows CE 5.0 will be available on the market. We have NOT invented this date, we just got it from Microsoft unofficially from an employee, whose name we can't betray. You may believe in it or not, but at least it may be considered a good first estimation. We are not betraying it to you only to gain some publicity, but to give to developers and users an idea how long will it take until next major upgrade of Microsoft Smartphone is coming (i.e. commercial availability of such smartphones).
