Hardware Review: Motorola MPx220
July 18, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.
The review is in German but it contains several pictures so it
is worth looking at. We ourselves were already comparing
Motorola MPx220 with the older Motorola MPx200
and presenting comparative
photos of MPx220 in both available colors - chocolate brown (almost
black) and silver metallic (our favorite!).
Here are some highlights from this German review of Motorola MPx220,
translate for you to English for your convenience:
- author of the interview is a Microsoft MVP and some
of them are getting early versions of hardware and software
for testing (some of them even already have Smartphone 2005 [ Windows Mobile 2005 for Smartphone ]
powered cell phones for testing!) ; no wonder therefore that this author has this phone 3 months before (as he says) before official launch of the phone (although according to our data MPx220 will launch around September 2004 at AT&Wireless in USA and around October in Europe)
- contrary to former reports, author writes that MPx220
will be available not only in chocolate-style brown and silver metaalic but also in pink color! what a nonsense!
- MPx220 has color external display (MPx200 has only monochromatic external display) but this display is poorly visible outdoors or in strong light conditions
- since MPx220 offers megapixel camera the maximal resolution of pictures taken with the built-in camera (equipped also in a kind-of flash) is 1280*960 pixels
- quality of pictures taken with the built-in
camera is very poor - pictures are not too sharp
and colors are not truly represented
- no mini-USB socket in MPx200!
- the Motorola MPx220 is powered by Windows Mobile 2003
Second Edition, but "Second Edition" in Microsoft Smartphone
doesn't bring revolutionary changes as it does in Pocket PC devices:
still there is no support for native horizontal mode - only vertical
mode is supported (the only worthwhile extension
of Second Edition in MS Smartphone is support
for QVGA = 320x240 resolution - and HTC has almost completed
development of a Microsoft Smartphone with QVGA display).
- Motorola MPx220 is full quad-band cell phone so if you are traveling across the pond in any direction - either to Europe or to USA - you have always the best possible cell phone coverage
- MPx220 has mini-SD card slot so eventually
possible usage of SDIO cards for Wi-Fi would not be possible
(in fact - as Motorola told us - there will be no Wi-Fi
add-on for MPx220)
- backlight of keypad is blue, so well usable in dark
lighting conditions
- MPx220 features voice control of many functions of the
phone, not just dialing
- when phone call is incoming then MPx220 shows
a photo associated with the phone number both on
external and internal displays
- if you are owner of Pocket PC with Bluetooth
then you will be dissapointed with Motorola MPx220 -
using MPx220 is a modem over Bluetooth from Pocket PC
is not working
