msmobiles.com revelations: the truth about Sun Corporation revealed
July 31, 2004 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Staring: Scott McNealy (pseudo: "Microsoft lover", hobby: Chief Executive Officer of Sun Corporation), Jonathan Schwartz (pseudo: "hardware monkey", hobby: Chief Operating Officer of Sun Corporation), Nicolas Lorain (pseudo: "wireless inept", hobby: wireless Java manager at Sun Corporation) and last and least: Russell Beattie (pseudo: "Nokia employee", hobby: owning 2 anti-Microsoft blogs).

In this story we reveal why, despite having market-ready product, the company producing "Redmond Decaf" was forced to dump it and abandon any hopes to commercialize it, any hope to even release it, even as freeware...

If computer and cell phone industries were governed by meritocracy, then some very skilled people would be rich and everybody could purchase for his/her Windows Mobile device, very cheaply (5 USD), a Java virtual machine compatible with latest J2ME standards: MIDP 2.0. Read on... at your own risk.

Now however people are limited only to the Java virtual machines that each Microsoft Smartphone hardware vendor pre-installs into the phone - with no possibility to buy one if your smartphone doesn't have Java, or if the Java, that your smartphone has, is not good enough for you (usually meaning: not compatible enough).

Our friends had spent several months of hard work, and produced "Redmond Decaf" - a Java Virtual Machine for Windows Mobile compatible with both Windows Mobile 2003 platforms - Pocket PC and Smartphone - and machine that from one single executable was running in both platforms:

wireless Java for Windows Mobile

Not only this machine was compatible with latest wireless Java standard - J2ME MIDP 2.0, but also it was very compatible - thanks to certain tricks it was possible to run also midlets (that's the name used for wireless Java programs) designed only for Nokia and Siemens phones! And this machine was running also midlets designed for MIDP 1.0, not just MIDP 2.0 midlets!

Unfortunately after many months of hard trying, our friends failed to achieve any progress in talks with Sun Corporation. The wireless Java manager - Nicolas Lorain ( Nicolas.Lorain@Sun.COM ) - is one big failure! And attempts to contact other people were also doomed to fail. Generally speaking situation looks now so that Sun Corporation doesn't allow other companies to sell Java virtual machines on the free market (for example: from PocketGear.com or from Handango.com) but demands that they will be embedded (pre-installed) in cell phones by hardware manufacturers of these cell phones. Furthermore Sun Corporation demands huge ransom: 50 000 USD minimum, to purchase various certifications and licenses + commision on each unit with this virtual machine. Damn it! Our friends prepared this machine themselves but Sun Corporation behaves worse than a robber in a dark street.

Sun Corporation is in a mess now. Jonathan Schwartz (COO) who is specialist in software is trying to find out what to do with Sun's Solaris operating system (a variant of Unix). Unfortunately there is nothing to do: Linux has won the server battle and Sun's Solaris is doomed to obliteration. Jonathan Schwartz is supposed to be knowledgeable in all software, also in Java but he apparently has no idea what "wireless" means.... he is just a hardware monkey that thinks about UltraSparcs, Itaniums, PowerPC processors and where to put that living dead: Solaris. Sun Corporation also fails to capitalize on Java - despite apparent success (Java is very widespread) Sun Corporation earned just a couple millions of dollars on it!

Scott McNealy (CEO) was once saying that he would rather feed drugs to his children, rather than allowing them to use Microsoft software. But lately after Steve Ballmer (the bald crying CEO of Microsoft) taken a wallet from his back pocket and graciously donated about 2 billion USD to Sun Corporation, Scott McNealy switched from ultimate hatred to sincere love. Microsoft has more than 50 billion USD in cash available right now, so ludicrous 2 billions make no difference. But Sun Corporation suffers massive problems and one of these problems is lack of vision. Scott McNealy is now a Microsoft lover and he has no vision how to develop business of Sun Corporation: Sun fails to capitalize on Java, Linux killed Solaris and nobody wants to buy [hardware] servers from Sun - people prefer some reliable companies like HP, Dell and IBM. Speaking of IBM: lately IBM called Sun to free Java to open source community! But Sun declines. Lack of vision everywhere.

Then comes the extremely incompetent wireless Java manager at Sun Corporation - Nicolas Lorain. He is not only boorish but also inept. He is a little employee that wants companies to pay ransom to Sun, big big ransom: 50 000 USD upfront plus big commisions on each sold unit!!! To break even such companies would have to invest around 100 000 USD upfront - minimum, and then sell 300 000 units minimum. In other words: Sun Corporation wants to collect license money from wireless Java from big corporations like Nokia, and is not interested in innovative small companies, or in some general spreading of wireless Java. Sun Corporation also fails to understand new "operator branding" or "distributor branding" business model introduced by Microsoft for Microsoft Smartphones. The purpose of Sun Corporation is ripping off poor companies and people, not some ideological good will or enabling Java everywhere.

Speaking of Nokia. Russell Beattie, who is employed by Nokia Ventures Organization, owns 2 anti-Microsoft blogs, and for many years already is involved in wireless Java programming, admits: "Honestly, there's not a Java app I use regularly on my phone [...] Java? Right now it's write once, pray, and debug everywhere." - or in other words: the Sun's sermon "Java - write once, run everywhere" is one of the biggest lies in computer and cell phones industries! Java midlet written for one cell phone most probably will not run in other cell phones!

Our friends had written Java virtual machine that would be maximally compatible (and thus avoid problems mentioned by Russell) and that would run transparently both on Microsoft Smartphone and Pocket PC, but this machine will never be delivered to customers, neither as commercial application nor as freeware - and all this thanks to Sun Corporation. It would be good for everybody in industry if some serious corporation (like IBM or HP) would overtake Sun or of if Sun would go bankrupt. Otherwise Sun is only confusing people and spreading further lies...
