msmobiles.com revelations: Handango gives away software without consent of developers of this software August 06, 2004 [General] | By Edward J. R. Sincerily we don't know whether it can be considered as stealing or not - you can judge for youself. Nonetheless the fact is that Handango gives away software (registration codes) without consent of developers of this software!
Other websites are affiliates of Handango and would never ever publish such story. We however care more for interests of indvidual users and developers (who are important for users at the end of the day) rather than for interests of some greedy companies... Heather Arrington, Business Development Manager at Handango who is repsonsibile there for software for Windows Mobile devices writes: If your application is available for sale through Handango, judges will be using a special code to purchase it on the Handango Web site. Software developers will not be paid for these purchases. Likewise, Handango earns no commission on these sales. In exchange for using the codes, judges agree to remove the software from their devices when judging is complete. ... or in other words, some "judges", who are usually hand-picked by Handango are getting FOR FREE, WITHOUT CONSENT OF DEVELOPERS, registration codes for software that is being sold on Handango. Developers put into the website of Handango special "RPN formula" (RPN = Reverse Polish Notation), and this formula generates registration codes. This formula should not be used for any other purposes, than to generate codes for paying customers - upon purchase and upon specifying some information (like user name) that is a basis for calculation for above mentioned formula. But now it becomes clear that Handango itself uses these formulas to generate codes for their own purposes. Interestingly developers are not even asked for explicit agreement on this "giving software for FREE". In other words: there is no guarantee that Handango employees are not registration generating codes for their "friends" and not paying any money to developers. If they break the general rule of "commercial software is not free, not for judges, not for anybody" once, we are afraid there is much more going on behind the scenes and developers are losing money. Is it stealing? Giving away commercial product for free without obtaining beforehand an agreement from the producer of this product? Judge for yourself. Don't forget that lately started to rip off developers hugely and takes away a lot more money from them. And now this "giving away" happens! One is for sure: somehting fishy is going on at Handango...
