HTC on the verge of breakthrough - results for July 2004 announced + HTC comments on HTC Typhoon
August 10, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

Forget Orange, forget O2, forget Verizon Wireless! All these cellular network operators are just puppets, stooges, dummy pipes, or whatever you may call them - anything else is a marketing blah-blah that some operator servile news sources are repeating mindlessly. It is HTC ( High Technology Corporation - simple name, isn't it?) - a company located in Taiwan - that is making new hardware designs for Microsoft smartphones and Pocket PC phones, that later on some puppets are branding under their own stupid names invented by marketing departments. That puppets bring no new significant technological contributions - all is work of HTC.

Shipments of HTC Typhoon model of Microsoft Smartphone - branded by puppets as "Orange SPV C500", "Qtek 8010", etc - are about to commence this month - it is 4th generation of Microsoft Smartphones made by HTC - and this time the long-term success of HTC corporation hinges on the success of this one model.. why? read on...

First of all let's take a look at the latest informaiton from HTC (courtesy of PPCW.net):

High Tech Computer Corp. announced that total revenues for July 2004 reached NT$ 2,038 million. HTC also announced it's new Smartphone, is the world's smallest Smartphone, has been shipping since August. It will be sold in Europe, US and Asia.

HTC today announced the total revenues for July 2004 reached NT$ 2,038 million, and grew 19.17 percent on a year-over-year basis. Revenues for January through July 2004 totaled NT$17,020 million, an increase of 57.50 percent over the same period in 2003.

"In the first half of 2004, HTC growing momentum mainly came from the popularity of PDA phone, but Smartphone shipment volume kept in a low base," said HTC. "However, HTC has allocated a lot of resources to shrink the component inside and leveraged huge software resources to improve the power management which drive the battery life of HTC new Smartphone improved significantly and become the world's smallest Smartphone. We believe this Smartphone will be the new business momentum of HTC and it will be sold in Europe, US and Asia.

HTC said," It's a very outstanding achievement to us and we received great feedback from our customers around the world. . They love to see the functionalities better, form-factor smaller, and power consumption lower. We don't have compromised on performance, but reinforce the performance of previous Smartphone hugely in hardware, software and applications."

Sales Report of July 2004 (Unit: NT$ million)

Total Revenues 2004 2003 YoY Growth
July 2,038 1,710 19.17%
January through July 17,020 10,80657.50%

So as you can see HTC thrives thanks to production of Microsoft powered cell phones! Why long-term success of HTC hinges on HTC Typhoon model? Because this time, contrary to early pioneer times, HTC will have to compete with Motorola and Motorola is the 2nd largest cell phone in the world and has much bigger competence in making cell phones and is releasing Motorola MPx220 model in the very similar time period. In fact vice president of Motorola responsible for Microsoft powered cell phones has been making fun out of HTC by scornfully mocking HTC and claiming that HTC is not really a competition for Motorola. The first 3 generations of HTC made Microsoft Smartphones were marked by short battery life, faulty SD card slot, poor Bluetooth functionality and compatibility, poor quality of phone calls, etc etc. If the 4th generation of HTC smartphones - HTC Typhoon (aka Orange SPV C500 aka Qtek 8010) will fail to meet expectations, then HTC is history.
