Mio Technology ( Mitac ) still seriously lagging behind competition and, strangely, excessively optimistic
August 10, 2004 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Mio Technology is a subsidiary of Mitac corporation specialized in making Windows Mobile devices, that is located in Taiwan (R&D) but that owns production factories in mainland China. During latest CeBIT (the biggest IT trade show on this planet) we have met CEO of Mitac:

Corporate President of Mitac International Corporation, Francis T. Tsai
(on picture above: Corporate President of Mitac International Corporation, Mr. Francis T. Tsai - is showing Mitac Mio 8860 Microsoft Smartphone especially to us!)

... and today latest sales perspectives of Mitac for year 2004 has become known: 800,000 PDAs and 200,000 smart phones are expected to be sold this year by Mitac! These numbers look good but we couldn't help noticing how seriously is Mitac lagging technologically behind competion: oh, come on Francis T. Tsai, you want us believe that a smartphone without Bluetooth is any good? Nowadays, when Bluetooth is needed for Bluetooth headsets and for Bluetooth GPS receivers? No Francis, you will not deceive us! Our readers should not be deceived into buying inferior smartphones: the market success of Pocket PC with built-in GPS (Mio 168) stifled innovation at Mitac and now, in 21st century, they dare to propose to customers some inferior smartphones without Bluetooth. Our advice is simple: don't buy smartphones made by Mitac!

Here is some information about perspectives of Mitac:

MiTAC International Corp. expects hit NT$10 billion with its Mio-branded products this year, twice of total revenue in 2003. Samuel Wang, president of Mio Technology Ltd. (MTL), the sales arm of Mitac Group's Mio-branded wireless communication products, said that over one million units of Mio-branded products including 800,000 PDAs and 200,000 smart phones are expected to be sold this year. Presently, Mio is the No. 1 PDA brand in Taiwan, South Korea, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Mitac is also actively deploying its sales networks for Mio-branded products in Europe, the U.S. and Australia, etc. The company claimed that a higher sales growth is expected in the second half of the year, as it will launch several new-generation handheld wireless communication products with global positioning system (GPS) navigation functions for automobile applications. Meanwhile, Market Intelligence Center (MIC), expecting an increase of PDA sales in third quarter as Palm, HPQ, and other international brand-name vendors to release new orders to Taiwanese suppliers. Demand for PDA phones and PDAs equipped with GPS is gradually increasing across Western Europe, and orders from operators and channel players in Western Europe have also registered a noticeable upturn, adds MIC.
