Windows XP Service Pack 2 brings native support for Bluetooth - another reason not to buy Bluetooth-less devices
August 13, 2004 [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] | By Edward J. R.

Yes, believe it or not but it's true! Now for many Bluetooth USB dongles no drivers are required (we used D-Link Bluetooth USB dongle but almost any that formerly worked on WIDCOMM drivers should work) to use Bluetooth in your good old PC:

Bluetooth in Windows XP with Service Pack 2

Of course Service Pack 2 brings also big improvements for Wi-Fi usage under Windows XP and huge improvements for Tablet PC users, but the most exciting information for us - fans of mobile devices like smartphones and PDAs - is that now you can spare yourself installing third party drivers for Bluetooth. You just plug-in the Bluetooth USB dongle, and Windows XP with Service Pack 2 detects it and in short time you can use it - pair with devices, connect to their services, connect your Windows Mobile devices over Bluetooth over ActiveSync, etc:

Yes, that's truth, maybe the amount of Bluetooth profiles in Microsoft's native support for Bluetooth is not that big as it is in the case of WIDCOMM Bluetooth software (drivers) for Windows XP, but it is native support for Bluetooth in Windows XP! After this many years the Bluetooth has become the standard, as Wi-Fi already previously was.

To give you idea how easy using Bluetooth is now in Windows XP, observe following pictures.

After plugging-in the Bluetooth USB dongle to your PC (if you have notebook with built-in Bluetooth you may wish to remove older Bluetooth drivers to use native Bluetooth support of Windows XP) you see just small notification:

... then some installation process follows - maximum a couple of minutes - and you can use Bluetooth to your joy:
