Orange dumps Motorola MPx220 smartphone! ... and other highlights from a FAQ session with Orange
August 23, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.
First was Titanic, then Motorola MPx100 and now Motorola MPx220?
We have just participated in FAQ session (IRC based chat) with 2 guys from Orange (an operator in EU that is always first to release new Microsoft Smartphone phones). Here are the highlights:
- Orange has not decided yet to take Motorola MPx220 to its offering! It could even be that Orange will not be selling MPx220 at all!
- Orange, Microsoft and HTC are working on the fix of GAPI errors and this fix will be released "shortly" as an update - it will be released as RUU or as Orange update - depending on the size
- There will be no upgrade to "Second Edition" for Orange SPV E200 ("Second Edition" = latest version of operating system, full name is: "Windows Mobile 2003 for Smarpthone Second Edition"); never ever!
- Orange will not be selling a cradle for Orange SPV C500 but it will be available from 3rd party suppliers
- Orange will be selling a pouch for Orange SPV C500 phone
- Security model in C500: all unpriviliged application work fine [no signing required] only privilige ones require to be signed with Orange certificate ; priviliged = for example such that access network resources
- Orange SPV C500 is focused on professional and enterprise users, and gaming never was a priority for it; Orange is however looking around for Microsoft smartphone devices that would target especially gaming
- Orange SPV C500 will be available on PAYG (pre-paid kit SIM card + network locked phone), but it is unknown when and what is the price
- very long battery life in Orange SPV C500 is due to new chipset and better battery management
- there is no danger, that Orange will run out of stock with Orange SPV C500 - Orange is confident that HTC can provide any number of units
- Orange was aware of the problem with GAPI (many games not working, see above also) but decided to launch this phone nonetheless and release update with correction soon ("as soon as possible") afterwards

Conclusions: Orange is committed to HTC made cell phones, like Orange SPV C500 but we will see Motorola MPx220 at Orange with a big delay - if at all! Practically speaking Orange has dumped Motorola MPx220 ...
