9 revelations about HP iPAQ Pocket PC phone ( h6315 + h6340 ) August 29, 2004 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. This phone, that represents latest generation of Pocket PC phones - with built-in Wi-Fi on top of Buetooth and GPRS connectivities - is on sale since last week in USA at CompUSA and within weeks it will be launched by T-Mobile USA (h6315) and will be available also in Europe (h6340) and elsewhere. So it maybe worthwhile to learn as maximum as possible about this phone - particularly if you are interested in Pocket PC phones ...
Yes, this phone doesn't have built-in keyboard (just attachable that's included in the kit) and it has a bit slower processor but in fact it has long battery life and very ripe software package... so, after all, it may be an interesting proposition for fans of convergent devices... Here come the revelations (when we say "HP iPAQ phone" we mean both models: h6315 + h6340): 1. HP iPAQ phone is WANDA:
WANDA is a reference design made by TI (click here to read more about it). HP iPAQ phones are practical implementation of WANDA reference design! This design consists of TI OMAP 1510 processor (see below), Bluetooth chip BRF 6100, Wi-Fi chip TNETW 110B and chipset for GSM/GPRS - TCS 2100 - all made by TI (Texas Instruments). 2. HP iPAQ phone is powered by TI OMAP 1510 processor at speeed of 168 MHz. Interestingly this procesor consits in reality of 2 processors: ARM-925 processor (to run Pocket PC applications) and TMS 320C55x (a signal processor that takes care of communication jobs). 3. while in USA HP iPAQ phone is sold as "h6315" and it has built-in camera of VGA resolution, in Europe the model name is "h6340" and it is sold there without camera! Since usage of camera is being forbidden in several corporations and this phone is designed to be a device for enterprise and professional customers, this decision seems to be correct. 4. HP iPAQ phone has built-in application for wireless connectivity called "iPAQ Wireless", and this application makes it possible to switch on and off various wireless connectivities: GSM/GPRS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Interestingly it is possible to switch on all three at once ! 5. The attachable keyboard has no backlight! You can't use it in the night therefore. (keyboards in MDA III and Motorola MPx both have keyboard). 6. HP iPAQ phone are powered by an outdated operating system, not by "Second Edition", so not only there is no horizontal/vertical modes, but built-in browser - Internet Explorer (IE) - doesn't have improved browsing where frames are represented one under another. Unfortunately HP will not release updates to "Second Edition" - it's policy of HP, so no update to "Second Edition" is coming... 7. HP iPAQ phone has ability to recognize time zone ("Enable network time synchronization"): after logging-in to foreign network it automatically recognizes time zone and changes the time in the phone. Unfortunately this time change is totally confusing time of your appointments so you may miss them or get them wrong. 8. Connector at the bottom of HP iPAQ phone doesn't support serial communications! In other words the only way to connect for example a GPS receiver is Bluetooth, because no GPS receiver with serial cable connection will work in the HP iPAQ phone. 9. HP iPAQ phone uses Bluetooth software from WIDCOMM, what is good because it offers many Bluetooth profiles and is reliable. For comparison's sake: HTC made Pocket PC phones use Microsoft native Bluetooth implementation that is quite poor.
