Orange SPV C500 - good smartphone for everybody, except for gamers September 01, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R. Not only cursor keys in Orange SPV C500 are only 4-way (for mobile gaming 8-way is optimal) but also these cursor key(s) are constructed in such a way that gaming is very difficult - second to impossible:
Now another hardware problem has been detected in Orange SPV C500: the phone doesn't recognize presses of the keypad when user presses cursor key and some other key at the same time - very vital for gaming: the C500 keypad cannot accept any other input at the same time as pressing the joystick / scroller. We have already raised this problem with Orange / HTC, and word has come back that this is a HARDWARE problem, and as such, no fix will be available in the current hardware. So, fingers crossed that HTC learn from their mistakes and fix it in future phones, but it definitely limits the C500s gaming potential To read more click here. Conclusion: if you are gaming with your phone, then Orange SPV C500 is not for you - HTC has totally let down their users. Unfortunately HTC has very dominant position in "operator or distributor branded Microsoft cell phones" so they are to arrogant to pay attention to such details. Why such major mistakes like these could pass testing? Well, because Microsoft smartphones are developed not with little kids in mind but for professionals and mobile enterprise usage. However all this marketing talk of Microsoft people (that we heard seen in interviews with them) that Microsoft phones are for the whole life: working and playing - appears to be worth nothing at the end. Microsoft should enforce some gaming related guidelines for hardware vendors or users should simply stop buying phones made by HTC, because this company clearly is too detached from customer needs. Please note: Motorola MPx220 is coming soon as well as some other smarpthones - you don't have to buy Orange SPV C500 or one of its clones (name "i-mate Smartphone 3", etc)....
