Rumor confirmed: Motorola MPx220 comes to O2 operator, albeit a bit overpriced September 15, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R. Previous rumor - based on O2 leaflets - has been confirmed by specialistic press that has information directly from O2: while specific release date has not been specified, O2 confirmed that Motorola MPx220 goes on sale through this operator.
This phone has megapixel camera, quad-band GSM, and clam shell design with external color display so naturally it should be more expensive than latest Microsoft Smartphone phones made by HTC (like Orange SPV C500), that lack these features, but how more expensive it is exactly? Well, Motorola MPx220 will be available at O2 in Europe for 300 Euro with subscription, what usually translates into 300+250 = 550 Euro without subscription. One can therefore clearly observe that this will not be a mass market cell phone like T-Mobile SDA or Orange SPV C500 but rather a model for businessmen. What Motorola MPx220 has that justifies higher price? It has GSM quad-band that however hardly matters for people not going to USA often. It has megapixel camera (compared to just VGA cameras in competition) but quality of this camera in all tests by now was very poor. It has also clam shell design and external display - while now slide form is taking over clam shell design in "being hip" or "having cool phone to show off" we must say that external display may be useful, but that external display of Motorola MPx220 offers unfortunately very poor quality of presented pictures (it is not active display). All in all it looks like Motorola MPx220, due to high pricing, will have no chances to compete with HTC made smartphones like T-Mobile SDA or Orange SPV C500. However due to clam shell design and quite cool looks it may find some following among snobs... Related official information about O2 launching MPx220 - directly from O2 - can be found here (however not in English).
