Porsche, Windows Mobile and Car Racing September 23, 2004 [General] | By Edward J. R. What the heck has Porsche to do with Windows Mobile? If you will observe closely this picture:
... then you can notice, that... ... web address of Mio Technology - maker of Pocket PC with built-in GPS receiver and maker of several Microsoft Smartphone cell phones - is visible there: www.mio-tech.com ! More info directly from Mio Technology (a division of MITAC) follows below. * * * * * Scott Miau Represents Mio Technology at Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asia Car Race Only company-sponsored racer of Chinese descent at the Shanghai event The 2004 edition of the Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asia (PICCA) is set to take place in Shanghai from September 24 to 26. The race will be held at Shanghai’s new Formula One racetrack, which was just opened in June and can seat up to 200,000 spectators. Along with the professional drivers from all over the world who are gathering for the event, there is an amateur racer eager to test his mettle—his name is Scott Miau, and he is driving for Mio Technology. He will drive Porsche’s 911 GT3 Cup racing edition car (390 horsepower) as he represents Mio Technology in what is sure to be an intensely contested and widely watched race. Miau is not only the first international-class racer that Mio Technology has sponsored, but is also the only racer competing at the event who is of Chinese descent and is sponsored by a company. Looking ahead, Miau will also represent Mio Technology at PICCA annual events in Seoul (October) and Macau (November). Mio Technology has been an enthusiastic supporter of international sporting events. Not only was its hot-selling Mio168GPS designated as an official product of the 2004 Olympics by the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, but the Mio136GPS is being used in product tie-ins with international racing events. Mio Technology is sponsoring PICCA racers in order to establish a presence at international sporting events. These moves have added momentum to Mio Digiwalker, with its brand image emphasizing youth, energy, and innovation. Mio Technology has selected Miau as the main recipient of its sponsorship funds in the hope that his youthful style and willingness to pursue his dreams—when combined with Mio Technology’s existing strengths in technology, speed, and innovation—will create new vitality for the brand. At the same time, the fact that Miau is also a MiTAC International employee will serve to encourage a spirit of innovation and bold pursuit of dreams within the MiTAC Group as a whole. Miau competed in an international race held in Sepang, Malaysia in May of this year under the MiTAC-Synnex Group banner, and although it was his first time to race in an international-class event, he placed in the top three among amateurs in the third, fourth, and fifth heats. In the Malaysia event, he was the only Taiwanese racer competing under his own name. Mio Technology president Samuel Wang stated, “To stand out in highly competitive international racing events is a real challenge. Besides a natural talent for racing, skill, and experience, a racer needs a sense of adventure and a fighting spirit, as well as a willingness to constantly push oneself to break through old limits. Scott Miau is a newcomer, but his racer’s spirit is closely allied with the Mio Digiwalker brand spirit. We hope that through sponsorship of a new generation of youthful racers that we can convey the character of the Mio Digiwalker brand, as well as encourage all young people to actively pursue their ideals.” With a Formula One race being held at the same time and place, and being the first international race ever held in Shanghai, PICCA 2004 has become the center of attention for racing fans around the world. Miau is the only company-sponsored competitor of Chinese descent at the PICCA 2004 Shanghai race, making his participation in the event of even greater significance for Mio Technology and the Greater China community. * * * * * Broadly speaking, international car races can be divided into two categories—Formula One and touring car. Racecars produced by Germany’s Porsche are mainly touring cars, while Ferrari concentrates on its renowned Formula One cars. In 1990, Porsche organized the first Carrera Cup race in Germany, and this event is considered the pinnacle of single-model GT racing. The Carrera Cup racers mainly drive 911 GT3 models, which are six-cylinder cars with a 3600cc engine delivering up to 390 horsepower. In the Porsche Carrera Cup’s concept of a single-model race, only minimal alterations to the cars are allowed (the body, engine, and suspension cannot be replaced), ensuring that the key to victory is a combination of racers’ skill, talent, and experience. Of all German touring car races, the Carrera Cup sees the fastest speeds. Once held only in Germany, France, and Japan, Porsche Carrera Cup events have been added in other Asian countries, Australia, and the UK. The holding of Porsche Carrera Cup races in Asia is seen as an important milestone for Asian professional car racing.
