mobile Gmail - remote access to Gmail from mobile device - possible thanks to purely Microsoft technologies and without additional programs
October 10, 2004 [Pocket PC] | By Edward J. R.

There is no doubt that Gmail - a free e-mail service from Google - is the best web based e-mail service on this planet - similarly like Google search engine, that is the best. However Gmail has one tiny disadvantage for fans of mobility: it can't be used on mobile devices, because Google is financing this service with advertisements that are not visible in mobile devices.

To work around these problems some dodgy websites have been offering mobile access to Gmail thanks to certain PHP scripts, that run on the side of the server. However usually in such cases you are compromising your security - your user name and password can be sniffed. On the other hand the very best and the richest Internet browsers that are available for mobile devices, including even NetFront of latest version, are not able to access Gmail !

Here we present a method, based purely on Microsoft technologies, to access Gmail from Pocket PC phones and PDAs - in a secure way, and without the need to use some risky third-party programs and servers:

In order to use this method you need to have Pocket PC with connection to the Internet and a computer connected to the Internet, that runs Windows Server or Windows XP Professional software. If you have access over VPN to your PC at work, it will suffice too! If you have a computer with Windows XP Professional at home, that is connected to the Internet over DSL - it will suffice too.

After establishing a connection to the Internet (or eventually to intranet of your company through VPN), you need to start "Terminal Services Client" in yor Pocket PC and point it to given computer, where remote access is activated (Windows XP Professional or Windows Server):

Please note that if you don't have VGA Pocket PC, then you should leave the check box "Limit size of server desktop to fit on this screen" unchecked!

After normal logging-in you can observe remotely desktop of your Windows computer:

Then you need to open browser and point it to gmail.google.com - an URL of Gmail, so that you could log-in:

After logging-in you can use your Gmail as usual and in fact you don't have to give up any functionalities:

Some remarks and tips:
  • to be sure that nobody will sniff on your e-mail ensure that check box "Don't ask for my password for 2 weeks" is not checked
  • if you are left-handed, then remember to set mouse pointer in the remote PC computer to right-handed - Pocket PCs can't handle left-handed mouse
Conclusions: in this story we have again proven, that Windows Mobile devices, including Pocket PC phones, are the best mobile devices of them all: with purely Microsoft technologies and with built-in software components (no need to use some inherently risky third-party programs), now you can access your Gmail from mobile devices! Although lately Google added "Automatic forwarding to another email account" within the Gmail, but still with above solution you don't have to use any forwarding at all and if you have Pocket PC with VGA display (640x480 pixels) you can read Gmail with even bigger comfort...
