Opera for Smartphone - A quick look at the technical preview October 14, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By Lutzh Haedrich. As reported earlier Opera web browser will come to your Windows Mobile Smartphone soon. Today we got a technical preview of the browser - here is what it looks like! ![]() ![]() It's here - it works! Opera for Windows Mobile Smartphones. It is just another milestone for the smart device in your pocket. ![]() Simply start to use it - an intuition wise interface makes it easy to you to start with Opera on your Smartphone. ![]() ![]() Opera writes about the browser: Opera 7.60 TP1 for Windows Mobile, Smartphone 2003 is available for download. Users must be aware that a TP is not a final product and does not contain all features that are expected with a final release. Furthermore, users cannot register a TP and it should be regarded for preview purposes only. The TP is free for all users, but will expire Dec 31, 2004. === Tutorial === A tutorial explaining the features of the browser and how to best use them is available here. === Installation === To install Opera you need to transfer the installation file to your phone and launch it. If you are not familiar with installing applications, we recommend the following process: 1. Open ActiveSync and click on Explore. 2. Go to My Smartphone. 3. Navigate to "\Storage\Windows\Start Menu\Accessories". 4. Copy the opera_wmsp_760b1.cab file to this directory. 5. Click on Start and then Accessories in the Start Menu 6. You should now see the file that you cut and paste into the Accessories folder, click on it to begin the installation. Note that this is a TP and that no work has been done on size optimization. If you have little space on internal disk it is recommended to install on external media. This will increase start-up time significantly, but browsing performance is not affected. === Connecting to the Internet === You need to configure an internet access point if you have not done so already. Detailed instructions can be found here. Opera will normally work with the same access point as Pocket Internet Explorer. === Release Notes === This TP is limited in features, but in our experience very stable. It can be recommended even if you are not used to beta software. The browser is based on the same browser engine as the Opera desktop browsers. In fact, this release has the same standards support as the currently available 7.60 TP1 for desktop. It also includes Small-Screen Rendering version 3.0 which provides even better usability, performance and layout closer to the original design than previous versions. This is the first publicly available version of mobile Opera to include this technology. The user interface feature set of the TP is however quite limited. There is for example no bookmark functionality or scrollbar. This will naturally be improved in the future. We appreciate feedback and suggestions in these forums. Only basic security protocols have been implemented. This may limit compatibility with some sites. Detailed information about missing functionality and known issues can be found here. === Mobile Accelerator === The TP includes free use of the Opera Mobile Accelerator which compresses mark-up and image files before they are downloaded to the phone, thus speeding up browsing and reducing costs. The Accelerator is pre-configured and enabled by default. === Hardware and Software requirements === This release is only for Smartphone 2003. It will not work on Smartphone 2002 or Pocket PC devices. The build has been tested on the following hardware: - HTC Tanager - aka Orange SPV-E200, Qtek 8080, I-Mate SP2 etc - HTC Typhoon - aka Orange SPV-C500, T-Mobile SDA, Audiovox SMT-5600, Qtek 8010, I-mate SP3 etc Get your hands on it HERE!
