CEO of PalmSource makes fun of Microsoft Smartphone
October 20, 2004 [General] | By Edward J. R.

David Nagel, who is a CEO of PalmSource - makers of Palm OS operating system - has just given an interview to German computer magazine "c't", in which he ridicules Microsoft's attempts in cell phone industry and makes fun of Microsoft! PalmSource lately announced new operating system especially designed for smartphones: Palm OS 6.1 code name "Cobalt" - so there was good opportunity to talk about smartphones... Here are some quotes from this interview - translated by us from German to English:

c't: PalmOne managed to be succesful in USA with Palm OS Smartphone Treo 600 right from the beginning, while Microsoft already for a long time is trying to establish itself in the market with its own operating systemm - Windows Mobile for Smartphones. On the other hand as far as operating systems for PDAs are concerned both PalmSource and Microsoft have the same market share. In Europe Pocket PCs are selling even better than Palm OS based PDAs and smartphones. Why is it so?

Nagel: Microsoft builds operating systems, that glitter thanks to their flexibility. Above all they must do everything, so that everybody can do something with such a system. However, in our opinion, PDAs and smartphones are by no means a computers for universal application. Apparently PDAs can be marketed as universal machines - more so in Europe than in USA. However users of cell phones want to use their devices quickly and easily and they are not expecting that their mobile phone will replace a notebook computer. That's why, we think so, Microsoft is failing with its concept of universal machine in a smartphone. The jungle of options is rather confusing the user. Compared to this, Palm OS is simpler but also more intuitive.

c't: what would you advice Microsoft with respect to smartphones?

Nagel: I would rather not give advice to Microsoft...

c't: ... and if you wouldn't be CEO of PalmSource?

Nagel: Then I would say: "just start all over right from the scratch" [from the beginning].

Conclusions: not only Symbian has over 90% of smartphone market but also PalmSource - another competitor of Microsoft - is very self-confident - after all it beats Microsoft in USA in the market of smartphones and with new exciting models coming out in next months it will be hard to defeat in the area of smartphones with QWERTY-keyboard. Microsoft must really try harder... or otherwise it will be beaten not just by Symbian but also by PalmSource...
