NewsBreak for Pocket PC program released - yet without Podcasting support, but soon... October 29, 2004 [Pocket PC] | By Edward J. R. At last some major software vendor for Windows Mobile has taken seriously RSS news feeds ! With this software you don't even need to have a desktop PC computer... and you can fetch the feeds wirelessly. * * * * * Ilium Software has released NewsBreak, a powerful Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC application that gives you real-time access to international news, entertainment, sports, and technology articles. NewsBreak comes with pre-selected news outlets, and makes it easy to add your own Internet news sources. You can use NewsBreak to follow your favorite blogs, or any public or company internal channel that uses RSS standards. For each news channel, NewsBreak shows you the total number of headlines available, as well as the number of unread messages. Tap any channel name, and NewsBreak opens a headline list. An icon next to each headline tells you if it contains keywords from your customized list of important words and phrases. The program can alert you whenever a story in any channel has one or more of these important keywords. It also indicates if you have already read the headline or the complete story. Most headlines have date and time stamps. Tap on any headline to open the summary view and see detailed information about the story. The summary screen shows you the complete news headline, and lets you read a brief summary. If you want to read the entire story online, simply tap the story link. NewsBreak will use whatever wireless connectivity you have available on your Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC including WiFi, Bluetooth, and Phone Edition connections. In addition, NewsBreak can use the pass-through option of ActiveSync for those times that wireless connectivity is not available. To get more information on a story, just click on the story link and NewsBreak launches Internet Explorer with the appropriate page. “With instant access to breaking news, Ilium Software’s NewsBreak application will enable users of Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs to stay informed and be more productive,” said Julie Wymetalek, manager of the Mobility Partner Advisory Council at Microsoft Corp. “When designing Windows Mobile, Microsoft sought to create a platform that would allow our industry partners to create innovative and exciting applications for use on mobile devices.” Credit: Marc Tassin from Ilium Software To learn more about this program or to download trial version or to download it click here.
