Hardware reviews of the latest T-Mobile -branded cellphones powered by Microsoft software
November 13, 2004 [General] | By Edward J. R.

While T-Mobile USA and T-Mobile EU have usually different portfolios of products in their offerings - as far as Microsoft powered cell phones are concerned, however across EU - in various EU countries - usually T-Mobile offers the same set of phones. For example T-Mobile SDA is availble already in Germany and Netherlands but it is coming soon also to T-Mobile UK and other countries in EU, where T-Mobile is active. The same will happen with T-Mobile SDA Music and T-Mobile SDA Compact.

Fortunately the magazine "connect.de", which is the biggest paper magazine about mobile communications in EU, has reviewed all 3 new phones: T-Mobile SDA, T-Mobile SDA Music and T-Mobile SDA Compact! Here are some highlights from these reviews and image snapshots:

"connect.de" magazine published 2 reviews, one with T-Mobile SDA only (see picture above) and one about T-Mobile MDA Compact and T-Mobile SDA Music:

Here are some highlights from these reviews:
  • T-Mobile SDA and T-Mobile SDA Music get mediocre results - just 3 out of 5 - but T-Mobile MDA Compact gets 5 out of 5!
  • as weak points of SDA and SDA Music are mentioned:
    • lack of megapixel camera - just VGA resoultion = 640x480 pixels
    • difficult to use user interface!
    • no possibility to send events and images to other cellphones over infrared or Bluetooth (which is not quite true, because with third party software it is possible)
    • T-Mobile MDA Compact is praised for many things, among others: small size (109x59x18 mm), small weight (153 g) and megapixel camera
  • T-Mobile SDA and T-Mobile SDA Music are praised for easy to use and powerful Inbox, i.e. e-mail client.
  • despite relatively weak overall result T-Mobile SDA is being recommended by "connect.de" as a very good cellphone for businessmen
  • in overall ranking of cell phones T-Mobile SDA overtakes Nokia N-Gage and some other Symbian powered Nokia phones, however not all: new Nokia smartphones with megapixel camera are beating T-Mobile SDA. Clearly megapixel camera is essential nowadays and VGA resolution is already outdated.
