The table is set - the menu is HOT
November 16, 2004 [General] | By Lutzh Haedrich.

This fall is the season of the Smartphones. T-Mobile launched two new products this week. The brother of the SDA Business called SDA music and the little sister of the MDA III named MDA compact. Get your fingers wet on our picture shoot out of the best Windows Mobile ever - video, screen shots, photos taken with the MDA compact as well as T9 on a PPC included!

To make it easier for you Smartphone friends out there we will leave you alone with the beautiful pictures of the SDA music, MDA compact, SDA Business and Qtek 8010. We'll come back far down that page with some technical stuff regarding the two new faces in T-Mobile's portfolio.

This gives you a little impression of the SDA music and the MDA compact side by side to the Qtek 8010 and the SDA Business. Now lets take a look at technical specifications and whats in the box. Lets start with the SDA music!

In the box:

- SDA music
- Standard 1050 mAh Samsung battery
- Stereo Headset (white with volume and talk button)
- Charger
- Belt case
- Mini USB data cable
- SanDisk 128 MB MiniSD + adapter for standard SD Card slots
- Software-CD (Outlook and applications for SDA music/it's only "Clearvue Document Suite German 2.0.0.2" on that CD!)
- Manual (short and long version)

On first start of the SDA music you will quickly recognize the different Homescreen. It features the name of the programs in the MRU list and the pointer is always focussing the middle icon of the Camera. The program list offers more surprises like revised icons, new entries and other changes. E.g. the profile menu is now in the first level of the program list and no longer part of the settings and in the profile settings you also find the sound settings. Calendar moved to menu item "Organiser" that includes calendar, tasks, date & time settings, calculator and voice notes. Supported languages of the SDA music are: German, UK/US English, Italian, Czech, Netherlands, Turkey, French.

Enough said regarding the SDA music? Remember, you can always ask questions in our forum. The link is at the end of this page...

Lets move on to the other sweety - the MDA compact. At first we take a look at the box - whats in there?

- MDA compact
- DynaPack 1200 mAh battery
- Charger
- Mini USB date cable (NO docking station!)
- Screen protector
- Standard Stereo Headset - 2 Stylus
- Belt Case - Software-CD (Outlook and applications for MDA compact/it's only "Application Suite German 2.0" on that CD!)

Do we need to talk about the features? Well ok: 1,3 Megapixel Camera for photo & video, Touchscreen, Bluetooth, Mini USB, Infrared, Windows Mobile 2003 SE, Triband, SD Card Slot, Windows Media Player 10, and so on. The coolest thing is the size of the MDA compact. It is not much bigger than the SDA as you can see on the photos. Camera is offering a full screen monitor for the object that you want to shoot.

Now - how ever you turn it - the MDA compact is sitting super cool in your hands...

There are discussions going around regarding a T9-like input method of the MDA compact. The biggest advantage out of this is the big keys you can't miss anymore. You can choose between T9, ABC and 123 input. Different languages for the "IntelliPad" are available - just check the screenshot.

The T9-like behavior is also there in phone book - when you start typing in a phone number it offers matches to contacts in your phone book that you can pick then by simply pressing the name and dialling starts.

Here are some photos taken today in the highest resolution that the MDA compact offers (960 x 1280 pixel, daylight as profile, no special tweaking or playing around with it before the photo, down sized to 806 pixel with in photoshop, no optimizing or other changes in photoshop).

And now for the records - a video filmed with the MDA compact.

On request: Here are some pictures taken in lower resolution (640x480) and a video filmed in 176x144 (Smartphone max resolution).

MDA compact video lower resolution.

Now you may ask whats the right one for you. SDA Business, SDA music, MDA compact, Qtek 8010 or MDA III. There is a simple answer for that question! Buy one of those and you will get as much Smartphone as you can get for a fair amount of money. You have to ask yourself if you like the Windows Mobile 2003 SE for Pocket PC Phone Edition more than the Windows Mobile 2003 SE for Smartphone. Both have their goods and bads compared to each other: If you travel alot you may like the bigger screen of the MDA Compact. If you carry suit case you may get more out of the one hand user interface of a Smartphone. If there are questions left for you - feel free to ask.

Cheers, Lutz
