Wake up, Skype ! HTC wants to put Skype into Microsoft Smartphone cell phones
December 10, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

HTC is developing now Microsoft Smartphone cell phones of next generation: equipped with QVGA display (320x240) and with built-in Wi-Fi. Let's face it: using Wi-Fi as add-on card:

Wi-Fi in Microsoft Smartphone

... while already possible is not a nice thing to do: the SDIO Wi-Fi card is protruding from the phone (see image above), is blocking the SD card slot and is availble only in SD format, not as mini-SD. So having built-in Wi-Fi in Microsoft Smartphone will be a very important breakthrough for Microsoft Smartphone platform. And what does it mean for end users? It means that with Wi-Fi in cell phone, Voice over IP becomes practically feasible!

And if somebody (like for example HTC - the biggest hardware vendor producing Microsoft cell phones) would like to embed Voice over IP into Microsoft Smartphone, then which one should it chose? The best of course! Which is the best? The absolutely the best Voice over IP software that ever was produced is Skype!

And since Skype for Pocket PC is available already now, so porting it to Microsoft Smartphone shouldn't be difficult because they both run the same core operating system: Windows CE. Apparently HTC wants to put Skype into their (Microsoft powered) cell phones! Here is a quote from an engineer from HTC:

I am the WiFi engineer of HTC.com.tw, which is the manufacturer of Orange SPV C500, a wince smart phone, and also the main producer of various famous PDA, such as iPAQ serious and Axim serious of Dell. We're interested in dual mode smart phones, and would like to discuss with you the possibilities of using skype smart phone version as our voice over IP application solution. Please contact with us for detail discussion if you're also interested in such field. My email is shanfu_lin@htc.com.tw
