Reflections: 2 years after Microsoft Smartphone launch : Christmas 2004 at Orange UK December 21, 2004 [General] | By Edward J. R. Orange UK was the first cellular network operator, that launched Microsoft Smartphone phones 2 years ago. While 2 years ago it was just one smartphone: Orange SPV - now the palette of Microsoft powered cell phones offered by Orange is much bigger and Orange even scored some major recognition for the latest model (a scans from latest Orange paper leaflet follow):
(to see ultra-high resolution version of above image click here) ... where you can notice that Orange is quoting various magazines: "A similar size to a normal mobile phone, the SPV C500 is the perfect smartphone for organising your day." -- PC PRO, December "The recently released Orange SPV C500 is a smartphone revolution. The device is a sexy, small and a feature packed smartphone." -- NEOWIN.NET, 19 September "This is probably the best smartphone around, arguably the most attractive and definitely the smallest - need we say more?" -- T3, October As you can see on the following picture the C500 is offered in 2 versions:
(to see ultra-high resolution version of above image click here) ... one is classic one (kind of black) and the other one is silver one - only for customers who are on "Premier" tariff. The most powerful, albeit a bit big in size, Microsoft powered cell phone that Orange is now selling is SPV M2000:

Orange UK still shows no signs of intentions to sell Motorola MPx220 (it would hurt sales of their other phones and it will be released by O2 UK instead) and still "HTC Magician" (known also as T-Mobile MDA Compact) is not yet being offered by Orange. Nonetheless the offering of Microsoft powered cell phones at Orange UK is very big and it shows the long (and successful!) way that Orange has travelled together with Microsoft. The business model of operator branded cell phones powered by Microsoft software works very well. On the example of Orange it is now clearly visible and other operators are already following the footsteps of Orange...
