The fastest 3G cell phone in the world is powered by Microsoft Windows February 03, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R. Super fast. Faster than fast. While regular 3G phones based on WCDMA (UMTS) have speed of 384 kbps (which usually in real life conditions drops to about 50% of it), this phone can do 3 Mbps now and up to 15 Mbps in the future! Yes, and it is powered by Microsoft software. Here is a photo of this phone:
Which one is it? Yes, it is the on the top (the one at the bottom is HTC Magician model here in T-Mobile MDA Compact version). It is OQO mobile computer powered by Microsoft Windows XP! Computer, not phone? Not quite! O2 UK carrier is now carrying out trials of HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology, that accelerates 3G and makes it possible to achieve 3 Mbps. For these tests O2 is using OQO computer (see picture above) with HSDPA data inserted in it! Currently trials are ongoing on the Isle of Man but O2 intends to launch HSDPA service everywhere in EU where it is operational: UK, Ireland and Germany! There are no regular cellphones that support HSDPA yet, therefore O2 is using OQO with HSDPA data card in a role of an HSDPA phone! Who said that Microsoft Windows is not good enough for 3G? Yes, it is. And not only for regular 3G/UMTS but also for 3G/UMTS that is extended with HSDPA !
