3GSM World Congress 2005 coverage: Microsoft and partners one day before official start of the conference February 13, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R. The 3GSM World Congress 2005 officially starts tomorrow, on Monday, February 14, 2005, however we have been wandering through premises of the congress and sniffing out for some interesting information - both general (see next news item) as well as related to Microsoft and its hardware partners... In this news item we present photos from today (1 day before conference) plus some rumors about this what will be announced at 3GSM World Congress 2005 in the area of Microsoft powered cell phones! One of the most amusing things that we spotted today are these cars: 
... that give new meaning to the name "Windows Mobile". These cars we have spotted... ... parked before Carlton hotel (the one to the right, with "Samsung" banner on it): 
Carlton hotel is the place where various Microsoft facilities are located and where press conference and party will take place too (on Monday, starting with 18:00). It is also the place where interviews with Microsoft employees will be taking place. On Saturday and Sunday (today) Microsoft held in this hotel Windows Mobile Marketing summit with hardware partners - this summit was however a close event not availble for press so we are not allowed to report about it - suffice to say that Microsoft's premises inside of the Carlton hotel are hidden very deeply so to find them one must follow signs with directions like this one: 
One of other highlights of this year's 3GSM World Congress 2005 will be big show and presentations related to i-mate's agreement with Skype and (probably) announcements of new i-mate branded models of Microsoft powered cell phones. This i-mate show will take place on this yacht: 
... and we even spotted the Korean music band that will be playing music there for enjoyment of press! After lurking a bit around i-mate's yacht Korean girls from the music band started giving us signs (apart from us, there was nobody else watching them - it was pre-conference day!): 
... what we interpreted as friendly gestures of type "hello, paparazzo!" This year also Sierra Wireless - makers of Voq smartphone - have again (last year they had it too!) their own yacht: 
... however Sierra Wireless last year didn't show anything new and if this year Sierra Wireless will not release new smartphone, then it will go bankrupt (it already is being sued due to wrong design and marketing decisions regarding Voq smartphone). Example of Sierra Wireless shows that some companies burn money for marketing instead of concentrating on design. Example of i-mate on the other hand shows that separation of markerting/support (both made by i-mate = Carrier Devices) and production/design (HTC in Taiwan) is very effective and in fact i-mate is the distributor of HTC made phones that provides the best support! The 3GSM World Congress 2005 starts tomorrow. With this news item we just wanted to give you some preview of what will be presented in next 2-3 days! We will be participating live in keynote sessions, press conferences, reviews and parties related to Microsoft cell phones - so please come to msmobiles.com later to get direct reports - both in pictures (photos) and also in audio (podcasts with audio recordings)! Rumors: Emblaze company will release 6 new models of cell phones powered by Microsoft Software and i-mate will announce new models of HTC made phones branded by i-mate! Apart from that: we expect some new Microsoft powered phones to be presented but most of them will be in prototype stage that may never materialize (like it was with Motorola MPx100 that was presented at 3GSM World Congress 2004 but later was cancelled and never released commercially).
