3GSM World Congress coverage: photo review of HTC Universal (aka T-Mobile MDA IV or 3G SPV)
February 14, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Update: see also here for even more photos of MDA IV - among others: comparison of MDA IV with MDA III and MDA IV with Nokia Communicator 9500 and with Sony Ericsson P910i!!!

Today we had an opportunity to play with HTC Universal and we have taken some pictures of it, including comparative photo shots of HTC Universal together with HTC Typhoon (Orange SPV C500 aka Audiovox STM 5600) and including also close-ups of volume up and down and external "accept phone call" and "reject phone call" buttons.

In photos you can see hands of John Starkwether, Senior Product Manager MED, Microsoft, who presented the HTC Universal to us.

One picture is more worth than 1000 words, so here are 7 fresh pictures of HTC Universal:

On photo below you can see that HTC Universal is not that big:

... and actually it is also not that heavy!

It is also not that thick as you can see here:

... where you can see that it is only a bit thicker than mini smartphone - HTC Typhoon.

Here is the photo with HTC Universal with open keyboard compared to HTC Typhoon:

Here is a photo of one side of HTC Universal where you can see mini-USB connector (yes!!! like in HTC Magician, no more pain of proprietary connectors like in MDA III/XDA II ... etc) and also 2 buttons for "accepting phone calls" and "rejecting phone calls" are visible:

... and these buttons may be helpful when you use the HTC Universal in a PDA mode (with keyboard hidden). Here are volume buttons and some other elements probably loudspeakers (stereo!):

Here is HTC Universal with open keyboard:

Here you can see that the 2nd camera is on the back together with fancy "Windows Mobile" logo under the camera:

... and again you can see mini-USB connector.

Conclusions: generally HTC Universal makes very solid impression - as solid construction and nice design. Since it is 3G phone with Wi-Fi, full Qwerty keyboard, Bluetooth and VGA resolution display - this phone seems to be the best PDA phone of all times - not only in the area of Microsoft powered phones...
