More phones based on HTC Alpine coming: after Xda IIi also Dopod 699 and i-mate PDA2
February 23, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
HTC Alpine is now available in UK as O2 Xda IIi but now it is coming also as Dopod 699 (China) and i-mate PDA2 (worldwide). HTC Alpine brings new generation of processor (PXA270, instead of PXA263), faster processor (520 MHz instead of 416 or 400), better camera (1.3 megapixel instead low-res VGA) and built-in Wi-Fi! It doesn't have built-in Qwerty keyboard but attachable Qwerty thumb-keyboard is available for heavy typers...

- weight: 190 g
- size: 69 mm (W) x 130 mm (H) x 19 mm (T)
- included battery: 1300 mAh
- nominal battery life (stand-by time / talk time): 168 hr /4 hr
- powered by Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Pocket PC Phone Edition
Conclusions: HTC Aplpine is obviously bigger than HTC Magician (sold under such names as i-mate JAM or T-Mobile MDA Compact) however it has newer generation processor than HTC Blue Angel and better camera. All in all for many people HTC Alpine is a top notch Pocket PC phone without built-in Qwerty keyboard because it also offers built-in Wi-Fi - something that is available only with help of attachable SDIO Wi-Fi car in case of HTC Magician. Lack of mini-USB and usage of the HTC-typical connector may be discouraging for some people too, but for people who would like have top notch Pocket PC phone but without built-in keyboard (that always increases risk of mechanical damage) HTC Alpine is the answer to their prayers...
