Windows Mobile at CeBIT 2005 - Microsoft STILL does not get it
March 04, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R.

CeBIT trade show takes place in a German city of Hannover in Central Europe, but make no mistake: it is the biggest Information and Communications Technologies trade show in the world - by the sheer number of exhibiting companies and visitors. Usually there are more than 7000 companies exhibiting at CeBIT and many hundreds thousands of visitors.

This year CeBIT takes place between March 10 (Thursday) and March 16 (Wednesday) with a weekend conveniently in the middle so that also people, who work can participate.

There is one problem though: contrary to many other companies that cater for mass market consumers and profesional users alike - coming from all over the world, Microsoft treats CeBIT as a local German event of secondary importance. The biggest technology trade show in the world a local German event? Clearly Microsoft still doesn't get it...

If you know German you can learn more about Microsoft's presence at CeBIT - in context of Windows Mobile- here. Some highlights:
  • in Hall 2 Microsoft will be presenting Pocket PC PDAs and phones and also Microsoft Smartphone - mainly from the consumer point of view
  • in Hall 4 Microsoft will present Windows Mobile platform from the point of view of application in enterprise solutions.
  • "European" Club Pocket PC Award will be announced. Although it is called "European" it is a clique-like event where a group of German speaking (Germans and Austrians mostly) close friends (mostly undeserving MVPs) are assigning award to somebody. To call this award "European" is nothing but a sham. Again Microsoft relegates organization of CeBIT to the cliquish and largely incomptent (at least in Windows Mobile things) Microsoft Germany!

On top of Microsoft's official activities at CeBIT there will be also Windows Mobile user group meeting, also generally designed only for German speaking people ("nur für Deutsche"): Hall 1, room "Paris", time: March 12, Saturday, between 12:30 and 15:00. More info about it here.

CeBIT is a huge event, a gigantic event. Due to central location of Hannover - a city where CeBIT takes place - many people from all over a Europe and also from other continents, are coming to CeBIT. Microsoft this year again is squandering opportunity to increase Windows Mobile acceptance among end users.

In picture above you can observe "2-tables strong Windows Mobile presentation" - the same 2 tables were visible at Microsoft's stand at CeBIT 2004 and at CeBIT 2003 - will we see this pathetic "2 table strong" Windows Mobile presentation again at CeBIT 2005? Very likely.

A word of advice: don't be discouraged by Microsoft's mistaken presence at CeBIT ! Although Microsoft's presence at CeBIT 2005 again is a big failure, many other vendors however will be presenting Windows Mobile phones, to just mention a few, it will be:
  • MDA IV and VPA IV at T-Mobile and Vodafone stands
  • BenQ P50 at BenQ stand (last year it was behind the glass, this year we will be able to touch it)
  • Motorola MPx (last Motorola employees were saying "we can switch it on, but it is not working", so this year maybe this phone will even work)
  • many many Asian vendors, that will present their whole portfolio of Windows Mobile phones, not just GSM ones - here we can even expect some new announcements!
  • no Orange - German market is clearly too competitive for Orange to be present in it and Orange, similarly like Microsoft doesn't understand that this is a global event. However Orange is not a global operator so it is OK.
Last not least: don't forget that nowadays, in era of cheap Europe-wide flights (19 Euro and dropping) you can have one-day trip to Hannover for CeBIT and back for little money! And entrance tickets are cheap - around 10 Euro a day, much less than in a more specialized conferences (starting at 700 Euro and usually more than 1000 Euro). Don't miss CeBIT 2005!
