Software review: software and drivers from Socket Communications for SDIO Wi-Fi / WLAN - version 2 March 06, 2005 [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] | By Edward J. R. Socket Communications, a company specialized in making hardware and software for mobile devices, lately has released new major version of their SDIO Wi-Fi drivers and software. In this detailed review we present many screen shots and descriptions of this software.
While many new top-notch Pocket PC phones already have built-in Wi-Fi, many low-end or small or cheap Pocket PC phones simply don't have built-in Wi-Fi. Should lack of Wi-Fi put you off and discourage you from buying a Pocket PC phone? We don't think so. In this story, the message that we would like to convey to you, a crystal clear message, is: whether given Pocket PC phone has built-in Wi-Fi or not, you can always add Wi-Fi through SDIO Wi-Fi card. Symbian powered cell phones do not have this possibility. Here is a quote from Socket Communications about this software: For Windows Mobile 2003, the Socket Low Power WLAN Cards now come with Socket WLAN Tools Mobile Edition v2 – an intuitive and graphical utility that provides ease-of-use as well as advanced network diagnostics and monitoring. This utility lets you easily find Wi-Fi networks, check the robustness of your connection and see how your Pocket PC is connecting to the Internet. In addition, WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) is now supported on certain recent operating systems for advanced WLAN security. To see our detailed review of this Wi-Fi software for Pocket PC devices (both Pocket PC Phone Edition devices and Pocket PC PDAs) click here. Just for the record: despite promising to us a version of SDIO Wi-Fi drivers also for Microsoft Smartphone, not just for Pocket PC, Socket Communications did not release them. So if you would like to use Wi-Fi as of now it is not possible with Microsoft Smartphone, only with Pocket PC phones and PDAs.
