Even Microsoft haters are enchanted by HTC Magician - the tiny Pocket PC phone March 08, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. British online tabloid The Register has just published a very positive review of HTC Magician (in i-mate JAM incarnation, but it is known also as MDA Compact, etc, etc). ![]() This review is very positive. Why? Nobody else will tell you the whole story but here is the answer: This review is very positive because The Register has affiliate relationship with another British company - Expansys - and since Expansys lately invested bigger money in advertisements of i-mate JAM in British (paper!) press, Expansys needs to sell maximum number i-mate JAM devices. Well, whatever the motivations, we are happy that even anti-Microsoft tabloids are admitting that some of phones powered by Microsoft software are brilliant. And HTC Magican truly is brilliant: Magician would make for a rather good standalone PDA, but with tri-band GSM/GPRS, infrared and Bluetooth in there too, plus SMS, MMS, email and instant messaging, it's almost as functional as a communications gadget can get. I'd happily sacrifice an integrated Wi-Fi adaptor to keep Magician the size it is. Since its SD slot can handle IO devices, I can easily slide in SanDisk's 802.11 card if I need to connect to a WLAN. Please note: in some countries HTC Magician Pocket PC phone is cheaper than Motorola MPx220 smartphone, for example: 400 Euro for MDA Compact (Magician branded by T-Mobile) and 430 euro for Motorola MPx220. Yes, we have reached a point in Windows Mobile history, when some Pocket PC phones are cheaper than Microsoft smartphones!
