Victory is ours: T-Mobile MDA Compact (aka HTC Magician) is the best PDA phone of them all !
March 11, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Some publications cannot be bribed, because otherwise readers would stop buying them. Some publications have their own mobile phone testing facilities and they have to be objective by nature. One of such publications is the biggest (the biggest number of sold issues) communications (paper) magazine in whole Europe - "connect" - that is being published in German language and available in several countries in EU, not only in German speaking ones (Germany, Austria, Switzerland).

"connect" has tested latest PDA phones and has found out that T-Mobile MDA Compact (aka HTC Magician or i-mate JAM, etc) is the best PDA phone and it beats even such phones as MDA III and Nokia Communicator 9500 and Nokia 7710. Seeing is believing so here is a scan:

Probably the small size of T-Mobile MDA Compact was a decisive factor in this victory but in the world of cell phones size matters and forcing users to carry bricks (as Nokia is trying todo) is not fair. Please note also that while only one Nokia phone is supporting Wi-Fi, all Microsoft's PDA phones (i.e. Pocket PC phones) are supporting Wi-Fi. All. Either in built-in form or attachable (through SDIO Wi-Fi card as in the case of T-Mobile MDA Compact).

It is worth mentioning that there is no Skype client for Symbian or Palm OS and if you would like to use Skype with Wi-Fi in a cell phone, then Pocket PC phone is the only answer.

In the table above the price of T-Mobile MDA Compact is 520 Euro but in reality, mostly in online shops, it is possible to buy T-Mobile MDA Compact in Germany, without subscription and without SIM lock, for 400 Euro = 536 USD = 280 British pounds. So T-Mobile MDA Compact is not only the best PDA phone but also the cheapest...

Victory is ours! At least in Europe. However in USA still there is a lot of work to do, because there the Palm OS is number one - in area of PDA phones (in area of PDAs the Pocket PC already has beaten Palm OS). In all American magazines Treo 650 scores number one - as the best PDA phone. The smartphone wars are therefore not over yet, and we observe merging of PDA phones (touch screen or big display) with smartphones (no touch screen but keypad), so there is yet a lot of developments ahead. However some things are for sure: the smallest smartphone and the smallest PDA phone are Windows Mobile: HTC Typhoon and HTC Magician - and only Pocket PC phones offer very good support for Wi-Fi - indeed all Pocket PC phones support Wi-Fi.

You can trust such independent magazines as "connect". And if they say that Windows Mobile PDA phones are the best - then they must be right.
