CeBIT 2005 coverage: hardware review - Samsung SGH-i300 March 13, 2005 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R. This year at CeBIT was the first time, when Samsung said clearly that it is releasing GSM based phones powered by Windows Mobile. Previously Samsung was offering only CDMA phones powered by Windows Mobile so they were usable only in USA. This time both USA and EU and also other areas will be able to enjoy Samsung's GSM based and Microsoft powered phones! Release date for the new smartphone (i300) and the new Pocket PC phones is the same: third quarter 2005.
In this news item we present detailed review of Samsung SGH-i300. Enjoy! We have been told by Samsung employees that Samsung SGH-i300 is powered by new Windows Mobile (i.e. "magneto") - not released yet officially by Microsoft - and that's the reason why it was being presented only with Samsung music player application running. Nonetheless we were testing Samsung SGH-i300 in big detail and below we present our impressions and photos. First you must realize that Samsung SGH-i300 will be offered in 2 versions, one fully in black and one partially in black and partially silver:
As you can see in subsequent photos it is visible, that Samsung SGH-i300 is bigger than Orange SPV C500 (i.e. HTC Typhoon - aka Audiovox STM-5600, etc) however it is only slightly bigger:
The specifications say that this phone is only tri-band:
... but we reckon that a version of this phone with US GSM bands (i.e. GSM850 and GSM1900) will also be released. Before we will take a look at Samsung's music player (built-in) and music playing capabilities, let's take a look at more photos where Samsung SGH-i300 is being compared to Orange SPV C500:
Apart from having built-in hard disk (3GB) the Samsung SGH-i300 has also a hot-swappable memory card slot:
... that is however in "TransFlash" standard and not in mini-SD or SD standard. This is dissapointing but having in mind that this phone already has big memory (hard disk), this is understable - after all TransFlash cards are smaller than mini-SD. Unfortunately Samsung SGH-i300 doesn't use mini-USB but Samsung's proprietary connector:
Apart from the connector at the bottom, that is not standard compliant, also the socket for head phones (or headset) is not standard, but Samsung-proprietary:
... but Samsung provides cable that is intelligently designed, because apart from microphone it has socket for standard stereo head phones:
... so right away, after bying Samsung SGH-i300 user gets possibility to reuse their standard head phones - without the need to buy some adapters! Now there is time to take a look at screenshots of Samsung's music player - a software that will be embedded into Samsung SGH-i300 ! The following screen shots will help you get idea how it looks like:
Conclusions: Samsung SGH-i300 is a stunning smartphone that proves that Apple iPod soon will be no longer needed. It has many fascinating features, many of them related to sound playback (3D sound!) but it also provides logical drive over USB 2.0 feature - so no longer ActiveSync is needed to copy files! In third quarter of this year Samsung will release Samsung SGH-i300 - the first smartphone in the world with built-in hard disk - and this smartphone will be powered by Windows Mobile! Need we say more?
