CeBIT 2005 coverage: some other highlights related to Windows Mobile phones
March 13, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

In this story we present some other stories that we spotted during CeBIT 2005 - mostly related to Pocket PC phones...

Yes, we have met people from BenQ as this picture shows:

... unfortunately we have been informed that BenQ P50 will be released to EU and USA at the end of the year 2005, not earlier! Reason of the delay? Apparently BenQ doesn't want to sell P50 in retail shops but it wants to get deals with cellular network operators - to sell BenQ P50 through these operators!

We have also been testing Motorola MPx - and this time it works fine and even Wi-Fi worked properly as you can see on this photo:

... however 32 MB of RAM in a Pocket PC phone is totally inappropriate, and that's why we cannot recommend this phone to anybody:

... and despite nice looks, the Qwerty keyboard of Motorola MPx has a very very membrane-like feeling - is much worse than the keyboard in Treo 650 for example (see below). We were asking whether this is just a prototype unit, but Motorola people claimed clearly that this is final model and that it is on sale in Asia and at some retailers in USA...

We have also met with good people from Taiwan, who are making this nice PalmOS based smartphone (with nice cover so that touch screen is safe in the pocket):

... and we learned that the very same people are working on a Pocket PC with GPS, that will be released by them "in 2 months":

We have also noticed that PalmOS based Treo 650 has been released commercially (i.e. went on sale) in EU - shortly before the CeBIT 2005:

... and since PalmOS achieved number one position in USA in area of smartphones thanks to Treo devices, we are worrying a little bit that Windows Mobile still doesn't have proper answer to the excelelnt Treo 650! Reason: Treo 650 has bigger resolution than HP iPAQ Mobile Messenger (320x320 compared to 240x240) and the BenQ P50 is obviously again being delayed...
