Which smartphone to chose? Increasingly answer to this question will be determined by looking into what kind of software is bundled with given cell phone. While HP is about to bundle TomTom in their upcoming Pocket PC phone with built-in GPS, Motorola decided to go for ALK Technologies:

ALK Drives Smartphone Satellite Navigation Solution for Europe CoPilot Live GPS software pre-loaded on select Motorola mobile phones; making satellite navigation easier and more affordable than ever.

ALK Technologies announced its CoPilot Live Satellite Navigation Software will be featured on some of Motorola’s newest converged mobile devices, enabling European mobile operators and retailers to take advantage of the surging demand for GPS-based services. CoPilot Live, a complete media-based navigation solution, provides detailed turn-by-turn directions -- both spoken and on-screen -- to mobile devices.

By combining the power of navigation with premium-quality digital map data from NAVTEQ, the CoPilot Live solution offers an incredible level of functionality, enabling business and consumer users to effectively plan trips and get directions. Couple those capabilities with the latest Motorola mobile device technology including mobile email, built-in cameras and downloadable music and consumers will enjoy a true “convergence” experience – all the functionality they desire in one, highly portable device.

Taking full advantage of smartphone features including larger, brighter, more colorful screens, bigger memory footprints and fast processors, the CoPilot Live software provides a full-featured Satellite Navigation experience, with detailed auto-zoom maps and spoken route guidance door-to-door in eight European languages. Powerful route calculation displays complex trips on the phone quickly.

Detailed street maps from NAVTEQ are preloaded onto a tiny storage card, with a comprehensive database of house numbers, streets and points of interest (for example petrol stations, cinemas and car parks). European travelers will appreciate CoPilot Live's seamless routing which calculates borderless routes across the Continent.

Of particular interest to business customers and mobile operators, CoPilot Live uses a high-speed GPRS Internet connection to deliver route-specific services such as live traffic updates, real-time vehicle tracking and the ability to send messages and new destinations directly to the driver via the Internet. It’s also highly adaptable for use in other markets. For consumers in the U.S., Motorola's VIAMOTO server-based technology is leveraged to enrich the CoPilot Live functionality.

Alain Kornhauser, Chairman and Founder of ALK Technologies said, "It’s exciting to extend our leadership position in navigation by integrating our CoPilot solution with Motorola’s innovative new handsets. With CoPilot Live onboard, consumers are empowered to freely choose, coordinate and execute their travels, while taking advantage of en route services such as traffic information and live tracking. The future of location technology is here today."

The first phones to include CoPilot Live navigation are the Motorola MPx220, featuring Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software and the Motorola A780, featuring Linux and built-in GPS for the European market. Both handsets will be available with select mobile operators throughout Europe.
