Release of T-Mobile MDA IV - the first 3G Pocket PC phone - delayed till Autumn/Fall 2005
March 16, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
Previously T-Mobile MDA IV was scheduled for release in Summer 2005.
... but web page of T-Mobile MDA IV at T-Mobile indicates that this phone will not be released in Summer 2005, but in Fall/Autumn 2005. In other words we can expect it not in August 2005, but rather in November 2005.
Since Symbian already has several 3G phones in offering, but Windows Mobile has none (CDMA-EVDO is not real 3G, it must be WCDMA/UMTS), therefore this news is a set back for Windows Mobile fans!
Some highlights about T-Mobile MDA IV (code name: "HTC Universal", to be sold also by Vodafone as VPA IV and by Orange as "3G SPV"):
- tri-band GSM + UMTS/3G ; no EDGE, no HSCSD
- 2 cameras, one for videotelephony
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on board
- mini-USB connector
- processor: Intel XScale 520 MHz
Please note: during CeBIT 2005 there was not even one working model of HTC Universal presented - just plastic dummies and a dummy that was showing presentation running behind the glass. No real phone, no real operation! The rumor had it that Vodafone had a working model of this phone on their stand at CeBIT 2005, but they were denying switching it on and looking at it - denying it even to press (us and our friends from other publications). In other words: HTC Universal is not ready yet and we are several months ahead before it will be ready for presentation, not to mention for commercial release...
