CeBIT 2005 coverage: new Windows Mobile smartphone: Pantech PH-S8000T
March 18, 2005 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

Pantech PH-S8000T will be probably one of those very fancy Asia-only Microsoft smartphones that will never come to USA or EU. We have noticed it at CeBIT 2005, but due to CDMA compatibility it is on sale only in Korea. It is quite big but it has QVGA display (320x240 pixels) and a very interesting hardware design - with rotable display (so called "swivel clamshell"):

Detailed specifications and several high resolution photos of this phone follow...

Specifications (according to the manufacturer):
  • CDMA 1x EV-DO 800 Mhz (no GSM!)
  • Windows Mobile OS 2003 Second Edition
  • PC Sync with MS Outlook (Mail, Schedule, Contact)
  • Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger
  • Swivel Clamshell for Multimedia
  • 1.3 Megapixel Camera
  • Photo Caller ID
  • 64 Polyphonic Ring-tone
  • Standby Time: 200 h
  • Talk Time: 4 h
  • Features for SK Telecom (an operator in Korea)
    • VOD
    • Smart Home-screen
    • NATE On
    • LBS Map viewer
  • Main LCD: 2.2 inch, 260K Color QVGA
  • Sub LCD: 1.06 inch, 260K Color
  • Size: 91.7 x 49.2 x 25.9 mm
  • Weight: 137 g
Photos of this phone follow.

As you can see on subsequent picture this phone is not small - it is even bigger than good old Orange SPV E200:

Thanks to QVGA = 320x240 resolution the clarity of display is high:

This phone has color external dislpay:

... and SD card memory slot (not mini-SD and not TransFlash/micro-SD):

On the top there is socket for stereo headset:

On the back there is camera, that is equipped even with a flash light:

All in all the swivel design is impressing:

Let's be frank about it: when this phone is in this position:

... then there is no way to take and make phone calls, because it lacks touch screen and has no additional buttons (HTC Universal / MDA IV - when placed in such position has "send" and "end call" buttons on the side).
