Microsoft licenses OTA access to Exchange Server to Symbian March 22, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R. By now fans of Symbian could claim that by buying mobile software from Symbian they were acting against Microsoft. Not anymore! Since year 2006 each copy of Symbian will include Microsoft's technology and part of revenues from Symbian will be going automatically to Microsoft! Buy Symbian phone and thus support Microsoft? Yes, this is the result of this deal. Windows Mobile division at Microsoft is not a serious part of Microsoft business, but Microsoft Exchange is indeed one of major cash cows at Microsoft! Previously we revealed exclusively that true push email is coming to Microsoft Exchange soon and... ... and it will mean, that Microsoft will at last be able to compete with RIM Blackberry on equal terms! It is important to point out, that contrary to RIM Blackberry solution, no additional infrastructure is needed and no monthly fees to RIM are needed in case of Microsoft Exchange solution for wireless e-mail. In this view, despite having very good technical solution, RIM's Blackberry is indeed very cumbersome and due to forcing monthly feeds, it is not as "good" as many people think it is. Microsoft previously licensed wireless access to MS Exchange to Nokia, palmOne and Motorola, so this deal with Symbian is nothing completely new, however it shows how clever Microsoft is: now Microsoft will be getting commision from each copy of sold Symbian license. In other words: Symbian people to some extend will be working for Microsoft! Microsoft licensing OTA (Over The Air) access to Microsoft Exchange to Symbian is not confirmed yet by official press releases, but as soon as they will appear (should be today), we will publish them at msmobiles.com! Watch this space....
