Hardware review : Orange SPV M2000 - a top notch Pocket PC phone with Qwerty keyboard and Wi-Fi March 28, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. This review describes HTC Blue Angel - the Wi-Fi phone branded in this case by Orange as Orange SPV M2000 but known at other operators and distributos under different names such as Xda IIs, MDA III, etc.
This phone features built-in Wi-Fi and thanks to availability of Skype for Pocket PC (there is no Skype for Symbian yet!), you can use this phone as "Skype phone" and call for free or very cheaply all over the world. Why am I waffling on about this Wi-fi stuff? Well, the M2000 has wi-fi built in, so you can merrily browse the web anywhere in your home provided you've got a wireless router. I tried this with my own home ADSL wireless router and it worked pretty smoothly. The wi-fi in the M2000 picked up my home network and asked me if I wanted to connect with it. After this it's just a matter of entering the correct password (I am using the WEP encryption mentioned before) and you're away! Conclusions: while it is true that HTC Blue Angel is the most equipped Pocket PC phone of them all (it has both Wi-Fi and Qwerty Keyboard), it is also true that it is not the latest generation of HTC made phones! In fact HTC Magician (aka MDA Compact, i-mate JAM, etc) has better processor and HTC Alpine (Xda IIi, etc) while doesn't have keyboard it has however faster processor and also Wi-Fi on board! Finally: some people stay with cellular network operators "for ever" and they are not eager to change to other operator (for example: to O2) just to get nice Pocket PC phone! On the other hand while they stay with Orange now they are able to get Pocket PC phone with Wi-Fi and thanks to prolongation of the contract with Orange (or signing new contract) they can even get this phone very cheaply.
