Microsoft named new Windows Mobile MVPs and dumped some old ones
April 02, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R.

In April 2005 the one-year period of MVP award expired for some existing MVPs and some new have been named.

"MVP" stands for "Most Values Professional" and is a title being awarded for one year to selected individuals on the basis of their contribution to community of users of Microsoft products. Each area, each group of Microsoft products, has its own group of specialized MVPs. Also in the area of Windows Mobile, Microsoft is awarding MVP titles...

As always the process of picking Windows Mobile MVPs is not transparent and is largely based on hand-picking by some (poorly informed) Microsoft employees and by some website owners, who already were MVP before (they are asked by Microsoft employees "to pick somebody who seems to be deserving"). Unfortunately still it happens that people with extremely tiny contributions - like writing for a website with tiny web traffic, participating in tiny user group, or contributing very little to the community, are getting MVP award! Sometimes even people who support other, non-Microsoft, mobile platforms are being awarded MVP! How it is all possible? Reason: there is lack of transparency and it is unclear what exactly the contributions are! This what MVPs write about themselves at Microsoft's MVP website (see link below) is often very outdated, egocentric and sometimes simply incorrect. While from top-down (i.e. generally MVPs, not just Windows Mobile MVPs) Microsoft intends to diversify maximally Microsoft MVPs - to offer this title to people from maximallly big number of countries and ethnicities, still the process of MVP awarding reminds more nepotism, than meritocracy.

Nonetheless, despite many mistaken decisions regarding MVP awarding, Microsoft sometimes also hits the jackpot: this year an example of awarding MVP to a deserving person is Ashley Warner, who is the biggest contributor (with regard to number of posts) to Modaco - a forum devoted mainly to Microsoft smartphone.

Our independent list of Windows Mobile MVPs can be found here (it is by no means complete - we will be updating it in coming weeks, please submit corrections anonymously). Official Microsoft's list of MVPs is here but it also is very incomplete and some MVPs are missing (they simply haven't provided Microsoft with photo and information).
