CellTrack for Microsoft Smartphone - GPS -less location finding application - now available in beta version
April 10, 2005 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

If you own a Microsoft Smarpthone now you can sign up for beta version of CellTrack - a program that can determine your geographical position without use of GPS receiver - just on the basis of cell ID triangulation! Update: contrary to previous information, this program works not only in UK, but all over the world (see a note at the end of this news item)...

CellTrack for Microsoft Smartphone

CellTrack Client

CellTrack is free and open source utility for tracking the location of GSM cellular phones. Currently C500 smartphones running Windows Mobile are supported.

A free CellTrack client can be downloaded and installed on your phone. This runs in the background and collects information on the GSM cell towers in your phone's vicinity. This information can be used to estimate the geographical location of your phone.

The client can be configred to automatically perform certain actions when the phone location changes. For example, CellTrack can be configured to automatically switch your phone to silent when entering work, or to divert all calls to your home line when you are at home.

CellDB Web Service

The CellTrack client can be configued to connect to the SPV-Developers CellDB server. This server hosts a community-built database of the locations of many cell towers.

We are currently experimenting with a variety of supplementary CellDB services. One such service allows users to display their current location on their blog, website, or forum signature.

This service will be launching shortly, however we are currently giving away beta accounts.

If you wish to participate in the trial, email: celltrack AT zone-mr DOT net.

Please note: there is nothing country-specific about the program. The program relies on members submitting the names for the cells they stumble upon, so locations will show as "Unknown Cell" until they are added.

We have also forgotten to mention, that the software can also report your location to a server, so you can get a location signature (an image that shows your location) on your web pages!
