Windows Mobile development tools matrix reloaded June 03, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R. Microsoft never misses opportunity to upset developers and users. With release of Windows Mobile 5.0, Microsoft not only managed to upset users by removing ActiveSync over Wi-Fi possibility, but Microsoft also removed possibilty to develop software for the new Windows Mobile with freely downloadable tools - developers must buy Visual Studio 2005 to develop Windows Mobile 5.0 software (cost: 299 USD in USA and 299 Euro in EU). Information from Microsoft: A while back, I posted a diagram illustrating how our tools map to versions of the platform. That generated quite of bit of customer feedback from .NET CF developers who want to use the latest tools while still being able to target users with a wide range of devices. As a result, things are substantially different in VS 2005 Beta 2. Here's the updated matrix:
