Cell phone sales down in Western Europe during the first quarter of 2005
June 05, 2005 [General] | By anonymous 6.
According to a recent report, fewer cell phones were purchased in Western Europe in the first quarter of 2005 than in the first quarter of 2004. The market shrank to 37 million units, an 8% decline.
The growth rate is substantially below the average global growth rate of 10%. In a recent report, Strategy Analytics speculates that the color phone upgrade cycle is nearing an end. The growth rate figures are the worst experienced in Western Europe since 2001. Gfk Marketing Services assume that while sales have slowed during the first quarter of 2005, mid-quarter reorder rates will reduce as well.
Conclusion: With 3G services ramping up, operators will be increasing pressure upon manufactures to provide low cost 3G and Smartphone devices.
