Cell phones powered by Microsoft's Windows Mobile are not (yet) popular in Japan, and the 3G Pocket PC phone "MATE" (powered by Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Pocket PC):
... is very big and looks like a phone from 2G era. However KDDI is using it to pioneer and test new original wireless web services:
- Multiple hop IP phone experiment:
... or in other words: switching from Voice over IP over Wi-Fi to cellular (CDMA) and back.
- peer to peer (p2p) exchange of images:
- OTOTONARI - GPS powered location based music service - the same music is played in the same location and based on the moves of people, groups can recognize each other:
- Content Cruising System - use of Wi-Fi (802.11b) to contact and exchange content

- DECENTRA - using PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) - finding location based on Wi-Fi infrastructure
