Sudoku, a popular number puzzle released for Windows Mobile Smartphone June 12, 2005 [MS Smartphone] | By anonymous 6. First available in the United States, Sudoku initially became popular in Japan in 1986 and attained international popularity in 2005. The popular number puzzle is now available for Windows Mobile Smartphone, as Smartphone SuDoKu. 
  Sudoku has recently become popular worldwide, the name was shortened from the original name 'Sūji wa dokushin ni kagiru', given by the original Japanese publisher, Nikoli. Smartphone SuDoKu implements the common 9x9 grid with 3x3 regions, and has 7 puzzles available in the trial version. The full version can generate an unlimited number of random puzzles.
