Software review : Lexipedia for Smartphone
June 28, 2005 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

Lexipedia is available for both Windows Mobile platforms - MS Smartphone and Pocket PC, but we review here a version for MS Smartphone. Lexipedia was released just yesterday, so this is review of a fresh software. What is Lexipedia? Shortly speaking it is whole Wikipedia in a form of a Windows Mobile application - so you can look up words without accessing Internet.

First of all it is worth mentioning that if you will not buy this program, then the trial version will be looking up only randomly selected words:

So to get full functionality, i.e. looking up of any words you wish, you need to enter registration information:

If you entered proper registration code, then you will see this dialog:

Sometimes it is difficult to remember how some word was exactly spelled, so this program offers some suggestions:

... however as you can see above, all these suggestions were wrong in our case. The proper spelling and the content for this keyword can be seen on the subsequent screen shot:

Unfortunately in the case of above mentioned word, if we wouldn't look up spelling of the word on Google search engine (that is suggesting proper spelling) then we wouldn't be able to find it with Lexipedia! Too bad!

It seems that content of the Lexipedia is not the freshest because for example in the Internet for the keyword "Windows Mobile" the information about Windows Mobile 5.0 can be found but for the same keyword in Lexipedia there is no information about Windows Mobile 5.0 - just about Windows Mobile 2003:

Here you can see what functionality is available in the menu:

... where you can notice that the only serious one is "Options" dialog:

... that lets you change look and feel of the Lexipedia.

Conclusion: Lexipedia is generally worth buying because then you have whole Wikipedia in your pocket and since now memory cards for Windows Mobile phones are available relatively cheaply (currently on sale: 1GB maximum for mini SD format and 2GB for SD format), the fact that this application requires over 200 MB of space should not be a problem but can save you a lot of money if you would like to issue the same queries over mobile Internet access... Lexipedia is not perfect obviously: it does not have images (that are sometimes available on the web for various keywords) and suggestions in case of wrong spelling of a keyword work poorly (as can be seen on the above example), but since this is just first version (literally) of this program, we can expect that improvements will be released in future and available for free download for existing owners of this application.

It is worth mentioning also that content files for Pocket PC and Smartphone are different and that there are 2 ways to install this application generally: by using EXE setup program for Windows XP or by using CAB file and data file - moved by hand to your memory card (most effective way to do it is with memory card reader because data file has size of over 200 MB).

To learn more, to download trial version or to buy this program click here. Version for Pocket PC costs $14.99 and a version for Smartphone costs $19.99 and it is possible to pay over PayPal for this application.
