Fair selection criteria? Fair selection of judges? No way: Handango has nothing to do with fairness !
June 29, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Handango has just announced Handango Champion Awards, where "top mobile applications" in various areas and for various platforms has been announced. Once again Handango's selection criteria are dodgy and once again Handango is patronizing developers...

Of course freeware applications have no chances to win, because Handango must have opportunity to rip off developers and with freeware it is impossible...

Let us not forget that Handango is ripping off poor developers very much: it takes away for itself between 50 to 60% of the total amount that customer pays...

Please note also that Handango's commenting system is doctored (i.e. altered deceptively) - negative comments in majority of cases are simply rejected by Handango...

Below we list the "winners" but we advice readers not to trust in these results:

Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC:
  • Best Application for Work - Pocket Informant 2005 by WebIS
  • Best Application for Play - Fish Tycoon by LDW Software
  • Best Application for Life - Spb Pocket Plus by Spb Software House
  • Best New Application - CodeWallet Pro 2005 by Developer One
  • Best Industry Application - MobiLearn Talking Phrasebook by MobiLearn
Windows Mobile-based Smartphone:
  • Best Application for Work - Papyrus by SBSH
  • Best Application for Play - Legacy by Redshift
  • Best Application for Life - Fizz Traveller by Fizz Software
  • Best New Application - Jeyo Mobile Extender by Jeyo
  • Best Industry Application - NewsBreak by Ilium Software
The list of (unfairly selected) judges this year (those that are Windows Mobile dedicated are underlined):
  • Ewan Spence, All About Symbian
  • Chris Leckness, Aximsite
  • Ronny Ko, Bityard Magazine
  • Phea Duch, Blackberry Cool
  • William O'Neal, CNET
  • Christiane Hornig, connect.de
  • Michael Sommer, Gadget Guy
  • David Novak, Gadget Guy
  • Laura Nuhaan, International BlackBerry User Group
  • Corey McLaughlin, Mobile Minds Media
  • Sandra Vogel, Mobility Specialist
  • Chris Brunskill, MoDaCo
  • Michal Jerz, My-Symbian
  • Ryan Kairer, Palm Infocenter
  • Mark Needham, PC Pro
  • Jen Edwards, PocketGoddess.com
  • Colin Gibbs, RCR Wireless
  • Mike Temporale, Smartphone Thoughts
  • Richard Bloor, SymbianOne.com
  • Carlo Longino, TheFeature (publication owned by Nokia)
  • Justin Ried, TheFeature (publication owned by Nokia)
  • Julie Strietelmeier, The-Gadgeteer.com
  • Judie Hughes, The-Gadgeteer.com
  • Andrew Carton, Treonauts
  • Bridget Meagher, WhatLaptop
  • Phil Lattimore, What Cellphone
As you can see above only 3 people from publications devoted to Windows Mobile were selecting applications for the awards. Clearly Handango's Champion Awards are a mockery of any justice - similarly like Handango's business model based on ripping off up to 60% of money away from developers... one is for sure: you shouldn't trust Handango in anything! ... and if possible try to buy software directly at web sites of developers - without Handango.
