Review of HP iPaq Mobile Messenger hw6515 + very harsh audio interview with HP Europe about this phone
July 06, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

No small talk. No trying to be nice. Just very harsh, relentless questioning HP about their new iPAQ phone. Not only questioning but also testing and double checking. Almost everything audio recorded and published as podcast - for you to enjoy!

Contrary to other news sources, that have to be polite with HP, we tried to get maximum information out of HP at any cost. Here it comes: interview with HP people and review of the new HP iPAQ phone.

We went so far as to compare sensibility and operation of GPS that is built-in into HP iPAQ hw6515 with ultra-sensitive Bluetooth GPS receiver of latest generation:

Believe it or not - but we have tested - indoors - with just a view to sky through remote window:

... and incredibly the HP iPAQ Mobile Messenger managed to get GPS fix, although our super sensitive Bluetooth GPS receiver (in combination with HTC Magician) failed!

Such incredibly fast GPS fixing (finding location) - in a very difficult conditions (i.e. practically indoors with remote view to sky) was possible thanks to "assisted GPS" technology that loads additional (current) information about GPS satellites from the server:

During this interview we were chatting mainly with Christian Chaffard from HP France:

Below you can see some comparative pictures with HTC Magician phone. Although having approximately the same thickness as HTC Magician, the HP iPAQ Mobile Messenger is however bigger:

Here you can see that the new iPAQ phone has a flash:

... and that also belt clip is included with this phone:

Other highlights from the interview:
  • the release date is middle of July 2005 - both in Europe and USA
  • the price for Europe will be 799 Euro
  • TomTom Navigator 4 will be included + possibility to download for free upgrade to TomTom Navigator 5
  • included will be only possibility to download one map of your area (for example: London or Paris) but to get map of whole country or continent you will have to pay. HP will offer however special deals on such maps
  • the included GPS utility allows for much faster GPS fixing and although it doesn't work without satellites in view, it practically works also indoors (as you can see above) - just when some remote view to the sky is available
  • for HP iPAQ hw6515 there will be no upgrade to Windows Mobile 5.0 and it will be released with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition
  • HP will not sell Wi-Fi cards for this phone; however this phone has 2 slots - mini-SD and SDIO - so adding Wi-Fi is easy
  • contrary to HTC Magician, the HP iPaq Mobile Messenger offers WIDCOMM Bluetooth stack that includes such nice features as: Bluetooth LAN access, that works with cheap Bluetooth LAN access points (it can serve well as substitute for missing built-in Wi-Fi) and possibility to listen to music over Bluetooth in stereo (with stereo Bluetooth headset from HP)
