Review : using Bluetooth keyboard with HID profile with Windows Mobile 5.0 devices July 11, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R. While we were the first to reveal that Windows Mobile 5.0 supports Bluetooth keyboards natively (i.e. without additional drivers), we haven't check it in hardware yet - no wonder, because first commercial devices with Windows Mobile 5.0 will go on sale in late September or early October 2005! Here however comes empirical verification of Bluetooth keyboard support with help of prototype devices running Windows Mobile 5.0! Arne Hess checked cooperation of Bluetooth keyboard with HID profile with Pocket PC hardware with Windows Mobile 5.0 and with smartphone hardware with Windows Mobile 5.0. Interestingly it works! However again it works worse with smartphone, than with Pocket PC: As great as native Bluetooth HID support for Windows Mobile 5.0 is, I found way too many problems (yet) in getting it working with the Smartphone. Before giving final jugdement we should wait however till October 2005 when Windows Mobile 5.0 devices will be shipping commercially - there is yet time to improve this Bluetooth HID keyboard support. Please note however that Microsoft doesn't attribute too much importance to Bluetooth as such (Bluetooth LAN access profile still is missing - also in Windows Mobile 5.0) so you shouldn't rely on Microsoft Bluetooth stack also in Windows Mobile 5.0 if you expect big number of profiles - then WIDCOMM software will also be the best choice (as it is in case of Windows Mobile 2003) - you must simply check out before buying what kind of Bluetooth drivers are used in given device - Microsoft native Bluetooth stack or WIDCOMM software...
