New application for Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone : PhoneFinder
July 18, 2005 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

This is just one of the first stories, where we are showing that it is pointless to buy nowadays a Windows Mobile phone, that is not powered by Windows Mobile 5.0! Pointless because new fantastic software will not work on Windows Mobile 2003...

Yes, Windows Mobile 5.0 brings many new fantastic APIs, including such that can control camera and that can report geographical location to many programs at once (based on GPS connected over Bluetooth to the smartphone). However before we will see many new fantastic programs for Windows Mobile 5.0 that use these "cool APIs" (camera, GPS/location) here comes PhoneFinder - a program that once activated can help you find a smartphone that you lost somewhere!

Here is how this program works: first you must install it (see instructions at the end of this story), then you must run this program and activate it by selecting "Enable it" checkbox:

... then, you can exit the program but you must remember the "PIN code" that you entered while activating the program. Now, if you would lose your smartphone somewhere and you don't know where you should just send SMS to your phone with content "1234" (where "1234" is a sample PIN code). Once your phone will receive this SMS...

... it will start saying "I am over here" and will display information on the display that can be helpful for somebody who has found your smartphone:

This program is a copyright of Microsoft and here is a short description of it from Microsoft:

PhoneFinder is an app that can help you find your phone if you ever lose it. When you run the app, you have the option of setting a PIN and enabling or disabling PhoneFinder.

To activate PhoneFinder, send a text message from any cell phone to your phone. Enter ONLY the PIN in the body of the text message. If enabled, your phone will wake up and start playing a sound. While playing the sound, it will also display your owner information so that if someone else finds your phone, they know how to contact you.

SMS interception is used to raise an event when your PIN is sent to the phone via a text message and the State and Notification Broker is used to retrieve the owner information if it exists.

To install this program download the following CAB to your smartphone powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 : PhoneFinderSetup.CAB and execute it, so that the program will get installed. Usually the program will be installed in \Program Files\PhoneFinder directory where you can find files PhoneFinder.exe and overhere.wav . If you would like your phone to speak another message (for example in other language or with other content), then simply replace overhere.wav file with another one! Enjoy!
