Microsoft squanders podcasting opportunity, in meantime: already 4 podcasts dedicated to Windows Mobile available July 20, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R. When Robert Scoble was interviewing Steve Ballmer (CEO of Microsoft) recently, then Steve Ballmer was denying that Microsoft lacks innovation by giving some 3rd class examples how innovative Microsoft is. Steve Ballmer instead of pretending that nothing happened, should sincerely admit that history repeats itself once again, and that Microsoft is again late with something (as it was with Internet) and Microsoft should introduce support for podcasting immediately - after all Apple corporation introduced native support for podcasting already a couple months ago... Unfortunately Steve Ballmer:
... is too complacent to admit that Microsoft squandered podcasting opportunity so let's take a look how the situation looks like now... The problem is, that despite Steve Ballmer claiming otherwise, Microsoft lags behind with innovativeness with regard to many new things, including podcasting: Microsoft plans to introduce support for podcasting in new operating system for desktops - Longhorn - that will be released in year 2007! Microsoft even refused to acknowledge name "podcasting" and naively thinks, that "RSS with enclosures" is just generic technology for everything, not just audio. However this naivety leads to the situation, where Apple is going even deeper with innovations: not only Apple has embedded native support for podcasting in iTunes (so that synchronization of Podcasts with iPod MP3 players is a bliss nowadays) but Apple also provides so called "enhanced podcasts technology" where one needs to use "Chapter Tool" program (available only for Mac OS, not for Windows) to create podcasts that are variating images embedded in audio files of *.m4a format and each image even has a link to respective website... and such enhanced podcasts are viewable in iPod MP3 players! ... not just in iTunes. Situation with Microsoft's support for podcasting is critical and instead of waiting for Longhorn until year 2007, Microsoft should introduce native support for podcasting in Windows Media Player and in ActiveSync - so that downloading and synchronizing of podcasts with Windows Mobile devices would be easy! Nothing less will help - Apple is pushing ahead with podcasting big time and there are already several million podcast downloads a day through Apple iTunes nowadays - soon it will be hundreds of millions... * * * * * Fortunately for users of Windows Mobile phones there are already 4 podcasts dedicated to these phones:
To all people who missed the whole podcasting revolution we recommend to read introduction to podcasting by Wikipedia.
