Review : Samsung SCH-i730 Pocket PC phone - the first phone review published by Microsoft itself
July 25, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

By now Microsoft has not been publishing reviews of Windows Mobile phones on their own website, but it changed: here come the review of the fantastic Samsung i730:

Samsung i730 Pocket PC

... that could be a hit in any country - but it is not GSM compatible and supports CDMA EVDO standard instead, so it is usable only in USA...

Wi-Fi. People have been clamoring for Wi-fi for years. Now it's here. You can use either the EVDO or the Wi-fi, but not both at the same time. So, if you're in an area that doesn't pick up EVDO, but does have Wi-fi, you can surf to your heart's content. In addition, if you want to take advantage of places with free Wi-fi hotspots, you can use this instead of EVDO. One issue: you can't surf on Wi-fi and talk on the phone at the same time. But you're welcome to try rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time.

Above quote (in italics) comes from a review that can be found in full here.

Conclusion: the Samsung SCH-i730 has everything that most people need: built-in Wi-Fi, Qwerty keyboard and built-in Bluetooth. On top of that it supports CDMA EVDO that delivers Internet speed access with average speed of 1 megabit per second - over 2 times faster than European 3G - UMTS... it's a pity that Samsung is not delivering such a phone for GSM or UMTS also - so that it would be usable also in Europe. There is Samsung i750 in pipeline, and it is similar to i730 - it has also Wi-Fi and similar construction, but unfortunately it has only regular cellphone keypad, instead of Qwerty keyboard...
